New legislation in the UK will bring a surge in the demand for electrical inspectors as inspection and testing for private rented properties becomes mandatory.

The Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020 was implemented on 1st June 2020 and means that private landlords in England are required to have their electrical installations inspected and tested by a qualified and competent person to ensure that they are safe for continued use and comply with the relevant electrical safety standards.

This applies to private landlords for all new tenancies starting from 1st July 2020 and all existing tenancies by 1st April 2021. A copy of the latest electrical safety condition report (EICR) should be provided to the landlord who then must provide a copy to the tenants, and the inspection must be carried out at regular intervals by a qualified person at least every five years.

Referenced in the legislation:

“qualified person” means a person competent to undertake the inspection and testing required under regulation 3(1) and any further investigative or remedial work in accordance with the electrical safety standards;

Inspection and testing requires a further level qualification, such as the City & Guilds 2391-52 5-day course or equivalent.

Available at Centrica Business Solutions, this course will help you to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to professionally carry out inspection and testing on electrical installations. It covers appropriate legislation, inspection and testing techniques, completing and issuing certificates or reports and understanding of results and measurements.
