18th Edition Wiring Regulations Update Course

It is the responsibility of every contracting electrician to ensure they are fully conversant with current electrical regulations, but it is equally important that maintenance electricians and electrical managers have sound knowledge of the regulations that relate to their environments and operations.

This course is recommended for holders of the current 17th Edition qualification to Amendment 3 2015 standard. It is primarily aimed at electrical tradespersons and electrical managers to make them aware of the changes introduced to the wiring regulations and implications to design and installation practices. The course will also be of great benefit to companies that intend to perform inspection and testing of fixed wiring installations by providing a sound knowledge of the latest version of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.

Course content

The course focuses on the changes brought in by the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, including:

  • Part 1 – Scope, Object and Fundamental Principles
  • Part 2 – Definitions
  • Part 3 – Assessment of General Characteristics
  • Part 4 – Protection for Safety
  • Chapter 41 - Protection against electric shock
  • Chapter 46 – Isolation and Switching
  • Part 5 – Selection and Erection of Equipment
  • Part 6 – Inspection and Testing
  • Chapter 64 – Initial Verification

The course builds to a 2-hour open book examination consisting of 60 multiple choice questions.

What can I expect from Virtual Learning?

Our Virtual Learning Courses give delegates the opportunity to learn from the comfort of their own home - ideal during this unprecedented time where social distancing is key.

Courses will be delivered online by one of our electrical tutors, just as they would be in a classroom facility. This is training online but not to be mistaken for E-learning. Our training is delivered in real time using video conferencing software that gives delegates the opportunity to watch and listen to the tutor, follow the presentation live and interact and ask any questions they may have.

There is scheduled course dates with set start and end times, and short breaks throughout the sessions. This differs to E-Learning where courses are pre-recorded and you can join at any time.

Our virtual learning can be accessed via a PC, laptop or tablet. When a booking has been made, we’ll then send you your joining instructions with the link to access the training shortly before the course – it really is that simple.

How do I take the exam?

Introducing Remote Invigilation

We are delighted to introduce remote invigilation for the City & Guilds 2382-18 virtual course, meaning there is no need to come to centre to sit the exam.

This opens even more possibilities for delegates from further afield who may have been thinking about completing the training, but who may have been concerned about coming into centre due to local travel restrictions.

During your course, remote and in-centre examination dates/times will be given to you for you to select the slot which suits you best.

Remote invigilation is available via Microsoft Teams and requires the delegate to have two cameras present whilst sitting the exam and to also share their screen so our centre invigilator can determine all provider requirements are met and the exam is conducted fairly.

You will be sent a link to the assessments portal and given a unique keycode where you will be able to complete the examination online. Results will also be available instantly.

For more details on the remote invigilation assessment process, click here to download our handy guide.

In-Centre Exams

You can also come to centre to sit the exam if preferred. Our training team will provide available dates/times at our venues, for you to select the exam slot most suitable.

Please note, delegates will require a copy of the BS7671:2018 publication, both for the training course and examination. The course fee does not include a copy of this.

The first amendment to BS7671, the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations was published on the 1st February 2020. It contains an updated Section 722 on Electric Vehicle Charging Installations. This update will come into place immediately and will be referenced in the course.

Amendment 1 is free to view online. For the read only version click here.

To purchase your own copy to print, please visit the IET website.

The following books are recommended reading and are essential for specific courses with examinations.
If you are booking a course, please purchase your books at the same time as you are buying the seats. We can post them to you, or delegates can collect them on the day of the course.
